Skill test
The Academy of Chivalry is not simply classes, it is a commitment to the
philosophy of chivalry. Students will be expected to achieve goals in line
with the most widely accepted of the knightly virtues: prowess, courage,
honesty, loyalty, franchise, and courtesy.
Over time, fighters who show themselves to be of chivalric temperament will
be given awards.

Academy of Chivalry Ranks
Armsmen are expected to work to increase their prowess at all times. Advancement in prowess will be shown by advancement in rank.

To be eligible for this rank, the armsman
- Must have achieved a Tintagel Basic Fighter Authorization.
- Must have won at least 1 direct challenge, any weapon, matched or unmatched weapons, any armour against other Novice.
- Must have acted as a second in at least 5 armoured challenges
- Must have fought a line of death with 10 Novice level fighters and won at least 5 of the fights.
- Must demonstrate basic knowledge of strapping and maintaining armour
- Must have a battle cry
- Must have motto
- Must demonstrate understanding of all basic strikes with each weapon type and basic defense

| Man at Arms |
To be eligible for this rank, the armsman
- must possess practice weapons for all the basic weapons.
- Must have a fighting authorization license.
- Must have a shield device or symbol and have it emblazoned on their fighting clothing and their shield. The tintagel student device will be worn as a belt favor.
- Must have won at least 1 direct challenges each with dagger, spear, weapon and shield, longsword, and pole axe with matched weapons, in realistic armour (not plastic or minimal armour). Three of these weapon challenges will be using Basic Rules, 1 of the challenges will be with Counted Blows, and the final 1 will be using either Armour Based Counted Blows or Plate as Proof rules.
- Must have fought a line of death with 10 Guardsman level fighters and won at least 5 of the fights
- Must have won at least 1 direct challenge each with dagger, spear, weapon and shield, longsword, and pole axe, with unmatched weapons, in realistic armour (not plastic or minimal armour)
- Must have acted as a second in at least 5 more armoured challenges.
- Must have participated in a tournament with at least 10 competitors.
- Must be able to differentiate types of armour and armour quality.
- Must have participated in a melee of at least 10 people or more.
- Must have been awarded the Franchise rank of at least Corporal.

| Master at Arms |
To be eligible for this rank, the armsman
- Must have his own personal armour of a historical style.
- Must have won 3 direct challenges each with dagger, spear, weapon and
shield, longsword, and pole axe with matched weapons, in realistic armour
(not plastic or minimal armour). Total you should win 15 matches. One of
challenge with each weapon will be using Basic Rules, Counted Blows, and
either Armour Based Counted Blows or Plate as Proof rules, respectively.
- Must have won at least 1 direct challenge each with dagger, spear, weapon and shield, longsword, and pole axe, with unmatched weapons, in realistic armour (not plastic or minimal armour)
- Must have fought a line of death with 10 Man-at-artms level fighters and won at least 5 of the fights
- Must have authorized to fight with metal (aluminum) weapons.
- Must have been awarded "Champion of Arms" for at least one weapon style.
- Must have been awarded the Franchise rank of at least Sargeant.
- Must have achieved the rank of Advanced Student in either unarmoured
longsword or unarmoured sword and buckler.

Special Ranks
| Marshal |
A marshal is a person who is judged to have the skills necessary to inspect armour and weapons, to provide safety overview during tournaments, and to help in the authorization of fighters. Marshals may also act as official witnesses to challenges and achievements.
To be authorized as a Marshal, applicant must
- Pass Authorization Course
- Have renewed their authorization by attending a review meeting once over two years.

Instructor certification is given only to those who
- Have achieved Master at Arms status
- Have been authorized as marshal.
- Have 30 hours logged as an assistant instructor
- Have attended a yearly certification seminar

| Knight of Tintagel |
The Title of "Knight of Tintagel" will be conferred only on one who is chose as a paragon of chivalry.
The title is never conferred automatically, but is granted by a special council comprising the instructors and the most senior Armsmen.
The following are the minimum requirements for being considered for the honor. The person under review must
- have had their name submitted for review by an instructor or the most senior students.
- Must have fought a line of death with 10 master at arms level fighters and won at least 5 of the fights
- have won multiple awards of Virtue and of Reknown.
- have achieved Master at Arms status
- have achieved Champion at Arms with all the Tintagel weapon styles
- have held a leadership position
- have held a franchise rank of no less than Lieutenant

Awards
Standard Awards will be presented upon the Armsman achieving whatever preconditions are required for that award.
Special Awards will be presented twice a year at a special tournament and event: One in march, and the other in September. In the case of special awards, the criteria given are the _minimum_ requirements. Special Awards are never automatic, but will be conferred as appropriate by a standing council Instructors of Tintagel and the top ranking armsmen.

A Champion of Weapon award is given to any armsman who has been victorious in 20 challenges with a given weapon. At least two of the challenges must have been to a Master of Tintagel.
In addition to the Awards scroll, a Champion of Weapon will be required to paint or otherwise mark a gold ring on his weapon, either behind the head or above the cross, as applicable, so that all might know the manner of opponent they face.

Awards of Reknown
- Standard Awards
- Tintagel Award of Arms
Given to any Tintagel Armsmen who becomes authorised as a licensed fighter. Armsman may wear the blazon upon his armsman tabard and may use it as his shield device. Device is chosen by the armsman, but must meet standards of medieval heraldry.
Every 6 months, the squire chosen as the best example of chivalric excellence is chosen to act a ensign (banner bearer) for Tintagel in all public events and in all battles that Tintagel armsmen attend abroad.
- Special Awards The Order of the Golden Compass
An Award for being the most recognized armman in other groups.
Notes regarding Challenges
- Only one official challenge may be made per week.
- Armsmen only receive credit for challenges made to someone of their own rank.
- Armsmen may make official challenges to non-Tintagel fighters. In our current system, SCA and Avalon fighters are immediately acceptable; challenges of members of other groups is subject to review.
